The Army Years

From Superstar to Soldier: Elvis Presley's Time in the U.S. Army

At the peak of his fame in 1958, Elvis Presley was drafted into the U.S. Army. He received his draft notice on December 20, 1957, and was granted a deferment to finish filming "King Creole." On March 24, 1958, Elvis was inducted, trading his gold lamé for army greens. This move was a significant public relations challenge but ultimately enhanced his image, showing him as a patriot willing to serve his country just like any other young American.

Assigned to the 3rd Armored Division, Elvis served in Friedberg, Germany, from October 1958 to March 1960. He performed his duties as a regular soldier, earning respect from his peers and officers. During his time in Germany, he met Priscilla Beaulieu, who would later become his wife. His service was marked by personal tragedy when his beloved mother, Gladys, passed away in August 1958.

Despite being away from the stage, his career continued to thrive. Colonel Tom Parker strategically released recordings Elvis had made before his departure, keeping his music on the charts. Upon his honorable discharge in March 1960, Elvis returned to a hero's welcome, more popular than ever, and ready to begin the next phase of his career in music and film.
